Poema Escolhido:
father. you always call to say nothing in
particular. you ask what i’m doing or where i am and when the silence
stretches like a lifetime between us i scramble to find questions to keep the
conversation going. what i long to say most is. i understand this world broke
you. it has been so hard on your feet. i don’t blame you for not knowing how to
remain soft with me. sometimes i stay up thinking of all the places you are
hurting which you’ll never care to mention. i come from the same aching blood.
from the same bone so desperate for attention i collapse in on myself. i am
your daughter. i know the small talk is the only way you know how to tell me
you love me. cause it is the only way i know how to tell you.
Intertexto:
Upon
reading Rupi Kaur’s poems, at first, I had a hard time picking just one. All of
them were interesting to me, especially the ones addressed to her father. But
then I came into this one.
This one
resonated to me the most.
Not only
do I feel the same way about my own father, but it also instantly made me think
of Jolyne and Jotaro’s relationship from Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure.

Jojo’s
Bizarre Adventure is a long manga story, with 8 finished parts and the 9th currently
releasing. The anime adaptation as of now has all 6 parts fully animated and
it’s the medium that I’ve used as material for this video.
It’s a
story with supernatural elements but, for this project, I’ll focus on
explaining the intersocial relationships. Jotaro Kujo is the father of Jolyne
and for her entire life, he’s been absent. He has his reasons for doing so, but
still it doesn't change the fact that he wasn't around. Even so, he has shown
moments of caring for her deeply, in his own quiet way.
Jolyne's part of the
story is focused on saving him. She learns the reason why he was always absent
and forgives him for it. Throughout many moments we can see how similar she is
to her father, sharing his same determination and tenacity. His proud instance.
Even to the point that, in Jotaro's part, his whole journey was about saving
his mother, a direct counterpart of Jolyne's journey.
Even with their imperfect relationship and their awkwardness toward each other, it's possible to see they love one another. Which is what Rupi's poem is all about.
